An Experience Tortola, BVI
Tortola, British Virgin Islands: A Luxurious Escape to Paradise
The British Virgin Islands (BVI) are the epitome of tropical luxury, and at the heart of this breathtaking archipelago lies Tortola—a lush, mountainous island offering pristine beaches, world-class sailing, and an exclusive escape from the everyday. But Tortola is just the beginning of what makes the BVIs a must-visit destination. Each surrounding island offers its own brand of magic, from hidden coves to legendary beach bars, and no trip is complete without experiencing the surreal beauty of The Baths on Virgin Gorda. It happened to be a stop of on our last cruise, “Disney Treasure.” It was also our first trip to Tortola. I cannot wait to go back.
The Islands of the British Virgin Islands
While Tortola serves as the hub of the BVIs, the surrounding islands each bring their own charm and adventure to the luxury traveler.
Tortola – The largest island, home to the capital, Road Town. Expect stunning beaches like Cane Garden Bay and Smuggler’s Cove, plus high-end resorts and incredible sailing opportunities.
Virgin Gorda – Known for The Baths, where giant granite boulders create dramatic pools and caves along the shoreline.
Jost Van Dyke – The go-to spot for a laid-back, beach-bar experience. Enjoy a Painkiller cocktail at the famous Soggy Dollar Bar.
Anegada – Unlike the other volcanic islands, Anegada is a coral atoll with endless white-sand beaches and some of the best lobster you’ll ever taste.
Norman Island – The rumored inspiration for Treasure Island, this uninhabited paradise is perfect for snorkeling and exploring sea caves.
Beef Island – Connected to Tortola by a bridge, this is where you’ll find Terrance B. Lettsome International Airport (EIS), the main airport serving the BVIs. Despite its small size, the airport is the gateway to paradise, with easy access to ferries and charter flights to the outer islands.
Dead Chest Island – Infamous for its connection to the legendary pirate Blackbeard. This uninhabited island is linked to the famous pirate song "Dead Man's Chest" from Treasure Island, with lore suggesting Blackbeard marooned mutinous crew members there with only a bottle of rum.
Experiencing The Baths on Virgin Gorda
No trip to the BVIs is complete without visiting The Baths on Virgin Gorda. This natural wonder is one of the most unique coastal formations in the world. Giant, smooth granite boulders form hidden sea pools, caves, and tunnels that lead to the most breathtaking white-sand beach. I have to preface that I’m not excited about small spaces, and I naturally assumed that we would be neck deep in water while exploring The Baths, I was wrong. What became a fun experience with strangers either with time on the beaches, or laughter during the trail, added to the memories.
The experience begins with a short walk from the entrance through tropical vegetation before arriving at the maze of boulders. As you navigate through narrow passageways and wade through crystal-clear waters, you'll feel like you’ve stepped into another world. The sunlight filters through the rocks, casting a golden glow on the caves and tide pools, making for some of the most Instagram-worthy moments imaginable.
Once you emerge on the other side, Devil’s Bay Beach awaits—a stunning, secluded stretch of sand perfect for swimming and sunbathing. After exploring The Baths, head to Top of the Baths, a cliffside restaurant with panoramic views and a refreshing cocktail menu that pairs perfectly with the island breeze. Our experience included a lunch buffet served by the most kind, and friendly women. The jerk chicken was heaven, paired with local vegetables and macaroni & cheese. Whether we plan a vacation for you to stop in Tortola, or you need something on your own. THE BATHS!
Travel Tips for the BVIs
Best Time to Visit: The high season runs from December to April, but for a more private experience, visit in May or November when crowds are fewer, but the weather is still perfect.
Getting Around: Private yacht charters are the ultimate way to island-hop in style, but ferries also provide easy access between the major islands.
Where to Stay: Unless you are stopping for the day as a port on your cruise. For the height of luxury, consider Rosewood Little Dix Bay on Virgin Gorda or a private villa rental on Tortola for an exclusive, home-away-from-home experience.
Final Thoughts
Tortola and the British Virgin Islands offer the perfect blend of relaxation and adventure, with untouched beaches, legendary sailing, and a touch of pirate history. Whether you're sipping champagne on a yacht, wading through the surreal rock formations at The Baths, or indulging in fresh Caribbean cuisine, the BVIs promise an escape where luxury isn’t just an option—it’s a way of life.
