The Paradise of Maui
Maui is more than just a destination—it’s a sensory experience. The moment you step off the plane, the warm island breeze carries the scent of plumeria and salt air, instantly transporting you to paradise. The rhythmic crash of the waves against golden shores is nature’s invitation to slow down and savor the moment. Sip on a perfectly balanced Mai Tai, where the sweet notes of pineapple and orgeat mingle with the rich depth of dark rum, as the sun dips below the horizon in a fiery display of pinks and oranges. Whether you’re basking in the golden glow of its beaches or indulging in its fresh island cuisine, Maui offers a perfect balance of adventure and relaxation. Here’s your ultimate guide to must-do activities and must-eat dishes while visiting this Hawaiian paradise.
Must-Do Adventures
1. Drive the Road to Hana
One of Maui’s most iconic experiences, the Road to Hana is a winding, scenic drive filled with lush rainforests, waterfalls, and dramatic coastal views. Stop at Twin Falls, Waiʻānapanapa State Park, and the Seven Sacred Pools at Oheʻo for an unforgettable journey.
PRO TIP - Make sure you review your insurance policy on your rental. It might actually be voided if you drive to Hana.
2. Catch the Sunrise at Haleakalā
Rising over 10,000 feet above sea level, Haleakalā National Park offers one of the most stunning sunrises in the world. Arrive early to watch the first light of day break over a sea of clouds. If you’re feeling adventurous, bike down the volcano for a thrilling experience.
PRO TIP - You must buy your tickets for your drive in advance, or secure a group tour to the top. I recommend that you do it the first morning after the arrival. You will not be on Hawaiian time yet, so it’s a great way to get started since you will already be awake.
3. Snorkel at Molokini Crater
A crescent-shaped volcanic crater just off Maui’s coast, Molokini is a marine sanctuary teeming with vibrant coral reefs and diverse sea life. Snorkeling here is a must for underwater enthusiasts.
PRO TIP - While you are exploring Maui or any of the islands, download the Shaka app, and let the satellite based app take you to local must-sees, stories, and information.
4. Explore Lahaina Town - WELL NOT RIGHT NOW
We were fortunate to visit Lahaina in 2021 before the devastating fires, and we will always cherish the memories of its historic charm, vibrant art scene, and oceanfront beauty. Our hearts are still with the residents, and we can't wait to see the rebirth of this incredible place when the time is right for tourism to return. Until then, we continue to support the community from afar and honor the Lahaina we fell in love with.
5. Relax on Maui’s Stunning Beaches
From the golden sands of Kaanapali Beach to the unique black sands of Waiʻānapanapa, Maui’s beaches cater to every kind of traveler. Spend a day soaking in the sun, swimming in crystal-clear waters, or trying your hand at surfing in Kihei.
6. Visit Wailea
For those seeking luxury and relaxation, Wailea is a must-visit destination. Home to world-class resorts, high-end shopping, and stunning beaches, this area embodies Maui’s elegance. The Four Seasons Resort Maui, famously featured in The White Lotus Season One, is the pinnacle of opulence. Even if you’re not staying there, stop by for a sunset cocktail and soak in the lavish surroundings.
Must-Eat Delights
1. Poke Bowls
Fresh, flavorful, and incredibly satisfying, poke bowls are a Hawaiian staple. Try them at local favorites like Tamura’s Fine Wine & Liquors or South Maui Fish Company for the freshest catch.
PRO TIP - You can get fresh, inexpensive poke at local grocery stores.
2. Loco Moco
This hearty Hawaiian comfort food consists of rice, a hamburger patty, a fried egg, and savory brown gravy. You can find incredible variations at places like Kihei Caffe or 808 Grindz Cafe.
3. Hawaiian Shave Ice
A cool treat on a warm island day, Hawaiian shave ice is a must. Ululani’s Hawaiian Shave Ice is a fan favorite, with flavors like passionfruit, guava, and li hing mui.
4. Banana Bread from the Road to Hana
Stop along the Road to Hana for some of the best homemade banana bread you’ll ever taste. Aunt Sandy’s or Halfway to Hana are legendary spots for this sweet treat. The best rule is if it's homemade on a road stop… buy it.
5. Fresh Seafood at Mama’s Fish House
For a truly special dining experience, book a table at Mama’s Fish House in Paia. With ocean-to-table freshness and stunning beachfront views, this is a meal you won’t soon forget. I am not a seafood eater, and they have plenty of non-fish options. I can’t wait to go back.
PRO TIP - You must have a reservation in advance. Let me help me with that!
6. French Pastries at La Provence Maui
Nestled on the slopes of Haleakalā, La Provence Maui is a hidden gem serving delectable French pastries, croissants, and quiches. This charming spot offers a perfect breakfast or brunch experience with breathtaking views of the island. CHILD. The Macadamia Croissant. My mouth is watering right now thinking about it.
